Did you know that International Women’s day is celebrated on March 8th and the first International Women’s Day was held on March 19, 1911?

In 1978, The Sonoma school district in California started Women’s History Week to promote the teaching of women’s history and to celebrate women’s contributions to history, society and culture. To include International Women’s Day, school officials picked the week of March 8th. This celebration continued to gain popularity and by 1980, President Jimmy Carter issued the first presidential proclamation declaring the week of March 8 as National Women’s History Week. The following year, congress passed a resolution establishing this week as a national celebration. National Women’s History Week became a month-long celebration after a successful petition to expand the event to the entire month of March by the National Women’s History Project.
