Our mission to share the African American story positively impacts the social-emotional health of children by providing a fuller, more complex narrative and images about the African American experience and community. Research shows that when a child has a positive identification with his or her cultural lineage, his or her ability to succeed in school and in life is greatly enhanced. Furthermore, studies also demonstrate the importance of multicultural education (teaching that incorporates the histories, texts, values, beliefs, and perspectives of people from different cultural backgrounds) in early childhood. Children who learn about the history and culture of communities outside of their own are more likely to adopt values of inclusivity and much less likely to develop bias against other cultures, religions, races, and ethnicities.
